Companies are under pressure to come up with innovations: strategic investments in holistically designed working worlds aim to strengthen competitiveness. In the exhibition area “Workplace of the Future | Design by HCD”, the Zukunft Personal is developing visions for the working world of the future in the Koelnmesse from 18 to 20 October. In cooperation with the company HCD Planungsgesellschaft, Europe’s largest exhibition for human resource management is giving visitors the opportunity to experience individual room and design concepts live for the first time on an area of more than 500 square metres.

The working world is experiencing a time of upheaval. Digitalisation and globalisation not only call for organisational changes but also a rethink of the structural and spatial aspects of the workplace. While inter-departmental project work and mobile working are increasingly a part of daily working life, rigid office concepts are the rule in around 80 percent of German companies. However, employees are looking for more flexible structures and the right to have a say in the design of their working environment. A study entitled “Working Spaces 2025” carried out by the Pragma Institute revealed that 61 percent of German office workers no longer wish to be tied to a fixed workplace.

Smart Working: all new in the office

In the competition for qualified specialist staff, more and more companies are reacting to these needs. The tech giants in Silicon Valley have long regarded the design of flexible working and room concepts as the task of human resource management. When it comes to fighting for the candidates with high potential, they aim to score not only with flexibility but also with innovative concept furniture. For example, built-in sensors regulate temperature, acoustics and light according to the individual needs of the employees.

But what will the office of the future look like? “The working world needs to be redefined: the ideal office would adapt flexibly to the work processes and needs of employees and support them in their creativity and productivity,” says Ralf Hocke, Managing Director of the exhibition organiser spring Messe Management. While project-driven collaboration benefits from an unhindered communication flow in an open atmosphere, there is also a need for office retreats for concentrated work. The Zukunft Personal will be presenting ideas and concepts for the design of these areas at the new exhibition space “Workplace of the Future | Design by HCD” in Hall 2.1 of the Koelnmesse. In this working world of the future, visitors can directly try out meeting solutions, concepts combining work and family, learning-friendly environments or relaxing and fitness oases.

Employee Experience: Participating in the transformation

There is a definite need for change. According to the Pragma Study, 41 percent of office workers are not satisfied with their current working environment. More than half of those questioned want an increase in quality or even a fundamental transformation. The study participants felt it was very important that they had a say and were involved in the transformation. “The design of the working world has an impact on work satisfaction and therefore the Employee Experience. Companies now need to find out how their employees want to work in the future,” points out Ralf Hocke.
