Anyone experiencing Gunter Dueck, the long-standing IBM manager, mathematician, author and star guest at many conferences and congresses, live for the first time, may wonder if they are hearing satire or simply harsh reality. We also experienced two different sides to him in the interview prior to his keynote speech at the exhibition Zukunft Personal. One moment he may be chuckling at his own explanations and in the next breath, he will be deeply philosophical. Tel Aviv has an impressive start-up scene: new businesses seem to shoot up like mushrooms. Around 1,000 of the total 3,400 start-ups in Israel are located in Tel Aviv – one start-up per 431 inhabitants (as at 2015). So Israel’s boom town is an interesting “innovation playground” for several international companies. One of them is Deutsche Telekom. We talked to Stephanie Cherrin, Investment and Program Manager for hub:raum, a kind of start-up network of the telecommunications company. While some people live at subsistence levels in spite of long and hard working hours, others are rewarded handsomely for similar tasks. Equal pay for equal work is rarely reality. A businessman in the United States refused to accept this and came up with a “crazy” idea: he renounced his million-dollar salary to pay each of his employees at least 70,000 dollars. With his announcement he unleashed a broad debate on the extent to which money is a motivating factor and whether profit as the unique corporate goal has become obsolete. Everyone’s talking about digitalisation and Work 4.0. No doubt about it, this subject is a must for human resource managers and other “work designers”, especially as they are still not putting on a particularly good show (see the example given here). Despite all the eagerness to move forwards, we would like to remind everyone of the main point and purpose of this venture: technology is supposed to serve people, i.e. the employees. Are we in danger of forgetting the employees by being preoccupied with digitalisation? We want to take a closer look at this question inspired by the main theme of the exhibition Zukunft Personal, ”Work 4.0 – The Employee Experience”. Interview with Prof. Dr Fritz Breithaupt, Department of Germanic Studies at Indiana University Bloomington (USA) & St. Gallen (Switzerland)
Prof. Dr Fritz Breithaupt, Professor and Chair of the Department of Germanic Studies at Indiana University Bloomington (USA), recently published a provocative thesis in the newspaper “DIE ZEIT”: individually tailored computer programs are being developed to become personal teachers – and this will be a reality in the near future. In twenty years from now at the latest, conventional teaching will be replaced by conversations with a virtual teacher. He didn’t have to wait long for the protests. Learning experts such as Prof. Ralf Lankau from Offenburg University warned of manipulative systems and the raising of individuals with social deficits and autistic tendencies. An article in the newspaper FAZ forecast the immediate end of data protection and incapacitation as an educational goal: such offers cultivate “learning hamsters” who are lacking in nothing but the happiness gained by knowledge and insight. Prof. Breithaupt will be explaining the “Talking Method” at the exhibition Zukunft Personal in October. We spoke to him personally about the advantages and disadvantages of such “further training bots”.
Interview with sleep researcher, Professor Vicki Culpin
The famous German film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder said: “I can sleep when I’m dead”. For a long time, sleep was considered as something for weaklings and slowpokes. To this day, a lot of managers boast of their ability to get by on little sleep, such as Marissa Mayer form Yahoo, Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk or Donald Trump, US presidential nominee. But recent research shows that sleep has a significant impact on managers’ performance, on their physical health and on their social and emotional life. Should organisations therefore make sleep their business as they do already with other aspects of well-being? We interviewed sleep researcher Prof. Vicki Culpin from the private business school Ashridge Executive Education, who will be a keynote speaker at the exhibition Zukunft Personal in October.

At this year’s Zukunft Personal, “NOX the Robot” illustrated a trend in the working world: robots are being used more and more, especially in production. On 16 September, the larger-than-life robot NOX could be seen wandering around the so-called “FutureLAB HR” in Hall 3.2 on behalf of perbit Software. He interacted with the visitors there – talked to them, sang, danced, flirted, sprayed them with water – to demonstrate that working with robots need not be frightening but can be a whole lot of fun. The event robot is the brainchild of a start-up from Pforzheim, founded by Tobias Danzer. We talked to him about “his creature NOX”.
